Cape May’s Monarch Butterfly Migration

Every fall, Cape May, New Jersey, becomes a gathering place for one of nature’s most remarkable events—the annual monarch butterfly migration.

Thousands of beautiful orange-and-black monarch butterflies travel south along the Atlantic Coast, stopping in Cape May to rest and feed before continuing their extraordinary journey to Mexico.

Cape May’s unique location at the southern tip of New Jersey makes it an important stopover for migrating monarchs. As butterflies follow the coastline south, many gather around Cape May Point, where they feed on nectar-rich flowers and wait for favorable winds to continue their journey.

On certain days, visitors can see hundreds or even thousands of monarchs fluttering through gardens, resting in trees, and gathering along the coastline.

The migration typically occurs from September through October, with late September and early October traditionally offering excellent viewing opportunities.

Some of the best places to spot monarchs include:

Cape May Point State Park: A popular location for observing migrating butterflies near the historic Cape May Lighthouse.

Cape May’s Gardens: Flower-filled gardens attract monarchs searching for nectar.

Coastal Natural Areas: Dunes and protected open spaces provide resting and feeding areas along their migration route.

Monarch butterflies travel as far as 2,000 miles or more to reach their wintering grounds in central Mexico. Remarkably, the butterflies making this journey have never traveled the route before.

Cape May is also home to the Monarch Monitoring Project, which has studied and tracked the annual migration.

The monarch butterfly migration is just one of the many reasons autumn is a wonderful time to visit Cape May. With comfortable temperatures, quieter beaches, charming Victorian streets, and beautiful coastal scenery, fall offers a special opportunity to experience this seaside destination.
