Cape May, New Jersey

Cape May is the town on the postcards: painted Victorian houses, a pedestrian mall downtown and a promenade along the ocean. The whole city is a National Historic Landmark.

It's the liveliest of the areas, with the most restaurants and shops, and most of it is easy to walk or bike. Stay here if you'd like to park the car on day one and leave it there.
