Cape May Trolley Tour

Cape May News - admin - April 14, 2020

If you’ve ever been to Cape May, you’ve probably seen quaint red and green trolleys rolling about. What you may not realize is that these trolleys offer a variety of unique tours that immerse visitors in the history and culture of Cape May.

Visitors can tour the major historical sites and landmarks of the region in a trolley vehicle with Cape May Trolley Tour. During the tour, the guide explains the historical and cultural significance of each stop.

The tours are run by a wonderful non-profit organization, the Mid-Atlantic Center For The Arts. Founded in 1970, MAC has done so much for the city over the years. They’ve restored notable landmarks including the Emlen Physick Estate and Cape May Lighthouse, launched the Cape May Music Festival and offer a wide selection of events year-round. Their volunteers are dedicated and knowledgeable, offering top notch trolley tours.

What I love most about the MAC trolley tours is that there’s something for everyone. Options include a Welcome To Cape May tour for first time visitors, Ghosts Of Cape May tour, focused on the city’s supernatural residents and a Mansions By The Sea tour highlighting the Victorian architecture of the area. You’ll also find the Cape Mayhem interactive trolley tour which allows passengers to explore some of the area’s strange superstitions and curious events, historic tour, children’s tour and lighthouse tour. During the holiday season, enchanting Christmas trolley tours are available.

Vacation Rental Pricing for Owners

Cape May News, Vacation Rental News - admin - March 25, 2020

One of the most important factors in owning a vacation rental in the Cape May area is to set your rates properly for your rental. If you price too high you may leave money on the table. However if you price too low you are not capturing the full value of your rental. So how do you determine the best rate for your rental. Comps. Study pricing of similar homes in your market. If your home has a highly desirable offering – such as ocean front, bay view or ocean view this should be front and center, and reflected in your pricing.  Travelers will pay a premium for these locations.

However, there may be aspects of your home you don’t even know are attractive to guests. In Cape May, for example, we have many guests who prefer the historic district and its location nearer to the mall than the ocean. Travelers want the convenience of the shops and restaurants. Some travelers just want the famous large Cape May porch experience where they can sit back and people watch. Others prefer a street where the horse carriages run. It’s critical to identify these selling points that may not be obvious at first and price accordingly.

Cape May is not your typical shore town. The town has now become a year round destination. Gone are the days of renting just in the high season. In Cape May the season now starts on Valentines Day and runs through the New Year. To capture the additional rent owners need to scale their pricing based on the time of year and the volume of business.

Know your market and adjust your pricing accordingly.

Tips for Rental Owners

Cape May News, Vacation Rental News - admin - March 17, 2020

Update your Description

Updating your description will provide your guest with the latest changes you may have made to your rental.
Don’t take a set-it-and-forget-it approach to your home’s listing. It should be a living piece of copy that you update regularly. Be sure to revisit your listing when you do the following…

Improvements to your home, such as performing renovations or adding new amenities

Changes to local attractions. bars, restaurants and activities.

Make your description seasonal. In the winter, words like warm and cozy are far more enticing than summer words, such as breeze and sunshine.

Keep your Availability Calendar Up to Date

Vacation Rental News - admin - February 14, 2020

One of the most important item in any vacation rental listing is the availability calendar. To often owners forget to update calendars and travelers then lack the necessary information to make a decision on a particular rental. Owners only have one shot to grab a potential renters attention and if renters can not see important information they will move on to the next listing.
The guest starts long before visitors arrive at your home. Not only is it inconvenient for guests to learn their desired dates are not, in fact, available, but it can even penalize your ranking on some sites like VRBO. On CapeMayVacationRentals.com we do not penalize an owners ranking if they do not keep their listing current. However the owner will receive fewer inquiries if a listing is lacking current availability. The better the listing in terms of quality photos, thorough descriptions, reviews, current rates and an up to date calendar the more likely an owners listing will receive quality inquiries and bookings.

Tips for your Cape May Rental

Provide a Manual for your rental guests

Want to avoid late night calls from guests regarding simple issues at your rental? Create a thorough guest manual with details about your rental.

Your TVs, sound systems, kitchen appliances, and hot tubs all have the potential to thoroughly confuse guests. A manual will help familiarize your guests with that particular amenity. It’s crucial to create a book or binder that details every item or function in your home. A few examples include:

  • How to program the thermostat and suggestions for settings
  • How to use your TV.
  • How to reboot your wi-fi
  • Cable Company phone numbers
  • Condo Rules
  • Check-in and Out times
  • Emergency help number for onsite issues
  • Local hospital and emergency care facilities.
  • How to use entry systems, electronic locks, and gates
  • Which remote controls pair with which audio/visual functions
  • How to operate kitchen appliances.

This manual should also include local attractions and history, any recommendations you have, a warm welcome, and instructions for departure.

Things to do in Cape May in 2020

Cape May News - admin - January 29, 2020

Whether you are just visiting Cape May for the day or vacationing in town there is always something to do. Check out these fun things to do while in town.

  • Trolley rides – Cape May’s Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities offers a range of trolley rides exploring the historic town of Cape May in addition to neighboring West Cape May and Cape May Point. From the Mansions by the Sea Trolley Tour to the popular Children’s Trolley to the Ghosts of the Lighthouse Trolley, the red and green trolley is a fun way to see Cape May from different perspectives.
  • Climb the lighthouse – The Cape May Lighthouse is one of 18 lighthouses in New Jersey. It is worth the 199-step climb to the top. During the summer, night climbs are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Stick around to take a peak at the nearby free nature and visitors center as well as the beach bunker.
  • Kayaking is a fun way to see Cape May from the water and are available from Cape May Nature Center on Delaware Avenue and the Utsch’s Marina. Guided kayak tours are available or explore on your own.
  • Get on board one of Cape May’s whale and dolphin tours to get close to the marine life that enjoys the waters off of Cape May.
  • Salt Marsh Safari offers skimmer boat tours that leave from the South Jersey Marina. Trip Advisor ranks this as the number one thing to do in Cape May with good reason. Participants get a close up look at the inhabitants of the surrounding salt marshes. Kids in particular will have a great deal of fun with this hands on excursion.
  • Sunset Beach is located in Cape May Point and is a poplar spot to hunt for Cape May diamonds. While swimming isn’t allowed on this rocky beach it is a must-see spot. Stay for a while to dig for Cape May diamonds, play a round of mini golf or just enjoy the view of the sunken concrete ship the SS Atlantus before it disappears forever. A short walk up Sunset Boulevard is the World War II Lookout Tower.
  • The Washington Street Mall is a hub of quaint shops and eateries. Sit for a bit and enjoy a free sample of fudge or an ice cream cone. On summer evenings the mall is buzzing with visitors.
