Cape May Point State Park

Cape May News - admin - May 1, 2019

There are three trails at Cape May Point State Park,NJ,the Red Trail(.5 miles),the Blue Trail (2.0 miles) and the Yellow Trail (1.5 miles). The entrance is at the parking lot just by the picnic table pavilion. The main trail(Red) starts out with a well maintained board-walk then meanders throughout wetland marshes and ponds.Intersecting off the Red Trail are the Yellow and Blue Trails. Being that the Red Trail is a boardwalk,it is wheelchair accessible trail and ends at a wooden deck for bird watching then ends.
The Yellow trail is similar to the Red Trail. The most interesting trail;however is the Blue Trail (my favorite). After it winds through the marshland, the trail’s boardwalk turns onto a dirt trail. Then one will follow the trail through a “Maritime Forest”.

Generally a New Jersey Maritime Forest is made up of American Holly,Eastern Red Cedar,Black Cherry,Shadbush, and Sassafras. The trail then leads through sand dunes then onto the beach. From their one will go south to the parking lot.

What an amazing little gem. A trail leading straight to the beach with a stop on a foot bridge to gaze over a low land waterway teeming with swan and other fowl. Beautiful flowers and heavy marshland growth throughout. A million dragon flies and a wonderful view of the Cape May Lighthouse which is in the state park right up the street. If you’re in Cape May, treat yourself to this one.
