East Lynne Theater Company presents: Aftermath

Cape May News - admin - March 21, 2022

East Lynne Theater Company presents a reading of the one-act play “Aftermath” by Mary P. Burrill for free, due to support from The New Jersey Theatre Alliance’s “Stages Festival.”

“Aftermath was first published in April 1919 in Max Eastman’s periodical, “Liberator” before it was produced by the Krigwa Players in The Little Theater Competition (performing alongside plays by Eugene O’Neill and Susan Glaspell) in 1928.  It tells the story of a Black soldier, who was awarded the French War Cross for his bravery in WWI, only to return home to discover that his father has been lynched.

Mary P. Burrill was not only a playwright, educator, and activist, but was the first Black graduate of Emerson College.  Her partner of twenty-five years, Lucy Diggs Slowe, was appointed the first Dean of Women at Howard University. The Slowe-Burrill house in Washington D.C. was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020 for “its significance to African American and LGBT history.”

“Aftermath” premieres on Wednesday, April 6 at 8:00 PM on ELTC’s YouTube Channel https://www.tinyurl.com/ELTCYouTube and is available through Saturday, April 9 at midnight. It can be viewed directly on a flat screen TV, but if viewing it on a computer, ELTC recommends connecting the computer to the TV with an HDMI cable so it can be seen on a larger screen with better sound. Closed Caption is available on YouTube. The direct link to “Aftermath” will be available several days before the premiere after it’s been edited.

Cape May Trolley Tour

Cape May News - admin - April 14, 2020

If you’ve ever been to Cape May, you’ve probably seen quaint red and green trolleys rolling about. What you may not realize is that these trolleys offer a variety of unique tours that immerse visitors in the history and culture of Cape May.

Visitors can tour the major historical sites and landmarks of the region in a trolley vehicle with Cape May Trolley Tour. During the tour, the guide explains the historical and cultural significance of each stop.

The tours are run by a wonderful non-profit organization, the Mid-Atlantic Center For The Arts. Founded in 1970, MAC has done so much for the city over the years. They’ve restored notable landmarks including the Emlen Physick Estate and Cape May Lighthouse, launched the Cape May Music Festival and offer a wide selection of events year-round. Their volunteers are dedicated and knowledgeable, offering top notch trolley tours.

What I love most about the MAC trolley tours is that there’s something for everyone. Options include a Welcome To Cape May tour for first time visitors, Ghosts Of Cape May tour, focused on the city’s supernatural residents and a Mansions By The Sea tour highlighting the Victorian architecture of the area. You’ll also find the Cape Mayhem interactive trolley tour which allows passengers to explore some of the area’s strange superstitions and curious events, historic tour, children’s tour and lighthouse tour. During the holiday season, enchanting Christmas trolley tours are available.
